After a pre-construction process that began in January 2005, construction commenced in July 2007 on the nearly $15 million Cleveland Hall Arts Building for Denison University. This project consists of renovating the existing 33,000 SF building and constructing 12,000 SF of 3 new additions. The only portions of the existing building to remain will be the perimeter walls and the roof structure. The interior floor structures, walls, ceilings, and mechanical/plumbing/electrical materials will be demolished and recycled.
One of the many critical aspects presented to the Project Team on this project is that it is registered to be a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) “Certified” Building. The LEED Green Building system is the standard for construction that minimizes the impact of the built environment on our natural and social landscape. This is a voluntary, national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. Recycling is only one of the many LEED procedures that are being implemented on this project, others include: light pollution reduction, water efficient landscaping, water use reduction, building re-use, use of regional materials, increased ventilation and use of low-emitting materials.
Site work, including installation of a shoring wall to allow for the nearly 30 foot deep excavation for the new Foundry/Mechanical Addition, footings, forming for concrete walls, installation of a high pressure temporary steam line, and interior demolition are some of the major activities which have been progressing well to keep the project on schedule. The project is scheduled for completion in early 2009.
