Heading into the winter, construction continues on the $7 million Walter K. Chess Center at Muskingum College. Early in the project, our staff worked through a complex site development package that included placing caissons and retaining walls that were required due to the hillside location of the building. Structural steel framing is completed, while masonry and the Ludowici Tile roof will be completed soon.
One unique aspect of the project that is taking shape is the pedestrian bridge. Clearly one of the most prominent features in the Walter K. Chess Center project, the pedestrian bridge extends from the new center to the heart of Muskingum’s residential quad.
While the final product will be a great addition to the campus landscape, the erection was equally impressive to us. First, each pre-cast section was delivered to the site from the factory by truck. These trucks, with independently maneuverable back axles, navigated through the winding streets of campus without incident. Each truck then backed into the ravine over wood timbers placed by a track hoe. Two cranes working in tandem then lifted the 120-ft, 36-ton concrete beams off of trucks and swung them into place. The entire bridge was lifted into place in a matter of several hours and is currently being finished.
When the project is completed, the student activity center will have meeting spaces, an extensive gym and general gathering spaces for students.
